Sarah Grand

Sarah Grand was born Frances Clarke, left an unhappy marriage to write, and in 1894 gave the age its keyword: the New Woman. The Heavenly Twins sold twenty thousand copies in its first year by saying aloud what novels did not say about syphilis and marriage. She spent her last decades as mayoress of Bath, six times over, respectable at last.
