Sigmund Freud and Wilhelm Jensen

This volume pairs a novella with the analysis it provoked. Wilhelm Jensen (1837–1911) was a German writer whose Gradiva, a tale of an archaeologist obsessed with a figure on a Roman relief, caught the attention of Sigmund Freud (1856–1939). Freud read it as a case history a novelist had written without knowing it, and his essay became the first psychoanalytic study of a work of fiction.
