Susanna Rowson

Susanna Rowson was an English-born American novelist, actress and educator whose Charlotte Temple (1791) was the best-selling novel in America until Uncle Tom's Cabin, and stayed in print for a century. She acted on the Philadelphia stage, wrote for it, and later founded a school for girls in Boston that ran for twenty-five years and taught subjects then reserved for boys.
