The life
Thomas Love Peacock spent his days as an official of the East India Company and his evenings mocking everyone he knew. His novels gather cranks, poets and philosophers around a dinner table and let them talk themselves into absurdity — Shelley, his close friend, appears among the targets. He was largely self-taught, left school at thirteen, and wrote some of the wittiest English prose of the century.
