Victoria Cross was Annie Sophie Cory, born in Rawalpindi to a British army family and determined to write what respectable women were not supposed to know. Anna Lombard, in which an Englishwoman keeps her Pathan lover after marrying elsewhere, sold in the millions and outraged the reviewers exactly as intended. She took her pen name from the medal, lived abroad on the proceeds, and gave interviews to nobody.
