Walter Pater

Walter Pater was an English essayist and critic at Oxford whose conclusion to The Renaissance — that we should burn with a hard, gemlike flame — became the creed of the aesthetes and so alarmed him that he suppressed it in the second edition. Wilde called it his golden book. Shy and unmarried, he lived quietly with his sisters and wrote very slowly.
