Walter Scott

Walter Scott was a Scottish novelist and poet who effectively invented the historical novel with Waverley (1814) and published it anonymously for years while serving as a sheriff and clerk of court. When his publishing partnership collapsed he refused bankruptcy and wrote himself to death repaying some £120,000 of debt. He also rediscovered the Scottish crown jewels, walled up and forgotten in Edinburgh Castle.
