The life
William Godwin was an English philosopher and novelist, a dissenting minister turned atheist whose Political Justice made him briefly the most famous radical in Britain. He married Mary Wollstonecraft, who died giving birth to their daughter Mary, later the author of Frankenstein; Shelley eloped with her, and Godwin, a lifelong preacher against property, spent years borrowing from him.
