The life

William John Locke was an English novelist born in Barbados who worked as an architect's secretary for a decade before his fiction took hold. His charming, wandering heroes — vagabonds, dreamers and gentle misfits — made him one of the best-selling authors of the 1900s, and nearly two dozen of his books were filmed. He spent his last years in France.
