A Norwegian mother spoils her son, protects him from every consequence, and the beautiful hair of the title is the sign of everything she has let him become — until a girl is destroyed by it. Bjørnson won the second Nobel Prize in Literature, wrote the words Norwegians still sing as their national anthem, and quarrelled publicly with everyone including Ibsen. The mother is drawn without a shred of sentiment. Illustrated with 53 full-page plates — paintings by Mesdag, Storck and Davidson among them.
He had given up his free, uncriticised bachelor life; his yacht was no longer seen off the coast in summer; his tours to England and the south had ceased; nay, he was rarely to be found even at his club in Christiania.
