A miser in a provincial town has a fortune nobody suspects and a daughter whose whole inheritance he intends to keep from her; then a bankrupt cousin arrives from Paris with good manners. Balzac wrote it in 1833 and made cheeseparing into tragedy: every candle counted, every sou hoarded, and a life spent in one room. Illustrated with 47 full-page plates — paintings by Haudebourt-Lescot, Legrand and Mallet among them.
May your name, that of one whose portrait is the noblest ornament of this work, lie on its opening pages like a branch of sacred box, taken from an unknown tree, but sanctified by religion, and kept ever fresh and green by pious hands to bless the house.
