A girl of extraordinary beauty is going blind, and will not wear the glasses that would save what sight she has — because they would spoil her face, which is the only capital she has. James settled in England and took British nationality at the last; this 1896 story is his most brutal about what beauty is worth as currency, and the narrator, a portrait painter, is complicit throughout. Illustrated with 42 full-page plates — paintings by Gonzalès, Manet and Millet among them.
