Love-at-Arms

Being a Narrative Excerpted from the Chronicles of Urbino, During the Dominion of the High and Mighty Messer Guidobaldo da Montefeltro

by Rafael Sabatini 1875–1950

The book, and the century it came out of.

A condottiero of Urbino is ordered to court a woman he has never met on behalf of a man who is not worth her, and discovers he would rather fight the whole duchy. Sabatini was raised across Europe, spoke five languages, and chose English because, he said, all the best stories are told in it; this is his Renaissance Italy — poison, siege engines, and a hero who argues in epigrams. Illustrated with 46 full-page plates — paintings by Raphael, Genga and Montagna among them.

A note on this edition

Love-at-Arms, by Rafael Sabatini, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
