Porter trained as a singer in Boston before turning to fiction and in 1913 gave the language a word, Pollyanna; the Billy books are her comedy of a household of bachelors invaded by a girl, and this is the one where the machinery pays off. Illustrated with 56 full-page plates — paintings by Tissot, Béraud and Boughton among them.
Calderwell had met Mr. M. J. Arkwright in London through a common friend; since then they had tramped half over Europe together in a comradeship that was as delightful as it was unusual.
