A clergyman writes a book proving the Bible mostly legend, London society takes him up as a celebrity, and two women — one clever, one clever about men — arrange the consequences. Moore was a Belfast journalist who wrote some sixty books and married Bram Stoker’s sister; this 1895 comedy is a period piece about the exact moment when doubt became fashionable, and it is much funnier than that sounds. Illustrated with 50 full-page plates — paintings by Trübner, Béraud and Dunn among them.
“Ah!” sighed Phyllis. She knew that her father had become possessed of a phrase, and that he was anxious to flutter it before her to see how it went.
