A rich patron brings a brilliant young American sculptor to Rome to make him great, and watches him instead discover women, idleness and his own limits. James’s first real novel, written at thirty-two, invents the subject he would work for forty years: the American of talent set loose in Europe with no idea what it costs. Illustrated with 53 full-page plates — paintings by Caffi and Gérôme among them.
Mallet had made his arrangements to sail for Europe on the first of September, and having in the interval a fortnight to spare, he determined to spend it with his cousin Cecilia, the widow of a nephew of his father.
