Swallow

A Tale of the Great Trek

by H. Rider Haggard 1856–1925

The book, and the century it came out of.

The Great Trek from a Boer woman’s side: Suzanne Botmar’s daughter loves an English castaway, and the family goes north with the wagons to Natal — to Retief’s embassy, Dingaan’s kraal, and the massacre at Weenen. Haggard was in the Transvaal for the annexation and heard the Trek from the people who had made it; Swallow is his Boer novel, and the English are not the heroes of it. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Friedrich, Fearnley and II among them.

Over twenty years have passed since we found some unique opportunities of observing Boer and K—— character in company; therefore it is not perhaps out of place that I should ask you to allow me to put your name upon a book which deals more or less with the peculiarities of those races—a tale of the great Trek of 1836.

A note on this edition

Swallow, by H. Rider Haggard, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
