Provence, 1799: a company of royalist highwaymen rob the government’s gold with perfect courtesy and give it to the Vendée, while Bonaparte comes back from Egypt to take the country. Dumas wrote the coup and the coach-robberies as one story — the boy Napoleon is in the room where it is decided — and the book has the fastest opening in his work. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Grobon, Vernet and Pether among them.
Just about a year ago my old friend, Jules Simon, author of “Devoir[2],” came to me with a request that I write a novel for the “Journal pour Tous[1].”
The Companions of Jehu, by Alexandre Dumas, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.
It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
