The Dolliver Romance

The book, and the century it came out of.
An old apothecary in a New England town, a great-granddaughter, and a cordial in a cupboard that may be the elixir of life — Hawthorne’s last work, broken off at his death. He was haunted by his own ancestry: a forebear had been a judge at the Salem witch trials. He could not finish anything in his last years and knew it; the fragment was published as it stood, and it is oddly tender. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Thayer, Mauve and van Gogh among them.
In “The Dolliver Romance,” only three chapters of which the author lived to complete, we get an intimation as to what would have been the ultimate form given to that romance founded on the Elixir of Life, for which “Septimius Felton” was the preliminary study.
