A prison governor takes in the infant daughter of a woman he has just seen hanged for murder, raises her with his own child, and tells neither which is which — then watches for the inheritance to show. Collins invented the detective novel with The Moonstone; this late book of 1888 is his attack on the fashionable science of criminal heredity, and the experiment is conducted on the reader as much as on the girls. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Neuhuys, Padlewski and Tidemand among them.
At the request of a person who has claims on me that I must not disown, I consent to look back through a long interval of years and to describe events which took place within the walls of an English prison during the earlier period of my appointment as Governor.
