Galsworthy was a barrister who never practised and was told to write by Joseph Conrad, then a ship’s first mate; this 1911 novel is his coldest look at his own class — the aristocrats are decent, intelligent, and immovable. Illustrated with 50 full-page plates — paintings by Cooper, Turner and Serres among them.
