Anton Chekhov

Anton Chekhov was a Russian writer who practised medicine throughout his career, calling it his lawful wife and literature his mistress. He supported his family from his teens by selling comic sketches, then remade the short story around mood and implication rather than plot. His plays, above all The Seagull and The Cherry Orchard, did the same for the theatre. He died of tuberculosis at forty-four.
