Chekhov practised medicine throughout his career, ran famine relief and cholera districts himself, and knew precisely how well-meaning gentlemen behave when the peasants are actually starving. Illustrated with 44 full-page plates — paintings by Vuillard, Hammershøi and Norrman among them.
