The life

D. H. Lawrence was an English novelist, poet and painter, the son of a Nottinghamshire miner and a schoolteacher, whose whole work turns on the war between them. The Rainbow was seized and burned by order of a magistrate; he spent his later years wandering Italy, Australia and New Mexico in what he called a savage pilgrimage, and died of tuberculosis at forty-four.
