Women in Love

by D. H. Lawrence 1885–1930

The book, and the century it came out of.

Two sisters in a Midlands mining town take up with two men — a school inspector and a colliery owner — and the four of them argue their way across England and into the Alps about whether love is a bond or a cage. Lawrence’s publisher dropped the book, it was called degenerate in print, and he could not place it for four years. It is the novel where he stopped writing stories and started writing forces. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Segantini, Hodler and Thoma among them.

Ursula and Gudrun Brangwen sat one morning in the window-bay of their father’s house in Beldover, working and talking.

A note on this edition

Women in Love, by D. H. Lawrence, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.

Not a mock-up: this page is taken from the finished volume. The ornament above the chapter belongs to its shelf and to no other, the opening letter is set as a drop capital, and the plate below carries the name of the painter and the year.
