David Graham Phillips

David Graham Phillips was the muckraker whose Treason of the Senate so enraged Theodore Roosevelt that the President coined the word muckraker to insult him — and the exposure helped bring about the direct election of senators. He wrote two dozen novels about money and marriage. In 1911 a man who believed Phillips had libelled his sister shot him dead outside a New York club.
