A fortune hunter from the city sets out to marry a rich farmer’s daughter in an Indiana town, and the farmer knows exactly what he is. Phillips was the muckraker whose Treason of the Senate so enraged Theodore Roosevelt that the President coined the word muckraker to insult him — and was shot dead in the street by a madman at forty-three. This short novel is his cleanest, and the girl is nobody’s victim. Illustrated with 55 full-page plates — paintings by Henri, Monet and Pissarro among them.
On an afternoon late in April Feuerstein left his boarding-house in East Sixteenth Street, in the block just beyond the eastern gates of Stuyvesant Square, and paraded down Second Avenue.
