The life
Edward Bellamy was an American journalist whose utopian romance Looking Backward (1888) sold hundreds of thousands of copies and spawned more than 160 Bellamy Clubs devoted to bringing its cooperative society about. Only Uncle Tom's Cabin and Ben-Hur outsold it in the nineteenth-century United States. He spent his last years defending and elaborating the vision, and died of tuberculosis at forty-eight.
