The life

Edward Bulwer-Lytton was an English novelist, playwright and politician, hugely popular in his day and served by an ear for the memorable phrase: the pen is mightier than the sword, the great unwashed, and the opening it was a dark and stormy night are all his. He wrote historical romances, occult novels and early science fiction, and sat in Parliament and the Cabinet.
