G. P. R. James

George Payne Rainsford James was an English novelist and diplomat, appointed Historiographer Royal by William IV and later British consul in Massachusetts and Venice. He wrote well over a hundred historical romances at extraordinary speed, so reliably opening with a lone horseman on a winding road that Thackeray parodied him for it. Scott himself had encouraged him to write.
