The King's Highway

The book, and the century it came out of.
England in 1714, with the Jacobites waiting: a young man with a name he cannot use, a highwayman who is a gentleman, a smuggler’s coast and a plot that reaches to the throne. James was Historiographer Royal to William IV and later British consul in Massachusetts, and wrote over a hundred novels — enough for Thackeray to parody him affectionately. The Jacobite politics here are exact. Illustrated with 57 full-page plates — paintings by van Calraet, Younger and Wijnants among them.
Though the weather was hot and sultry, and the summer was at its height, yet the evening was gloomy, and low, angry clouds hung over the distant line of the sea, when, under the shelter of some low-browed cliffs upon the Irish coast, three persons stood together, two of whom were talking earnestly.
