The life

Gaston Leroux was a French journalist turned novelist who reported from revolutionary Russia before he wrote fiction. He created the reporter-detective Rouletabille in The Mystery of the Yellow Room, an early masterpiece of the locked-room puzzle. The Phantom of the Opera (1910) drew on real features of the Paris Opera, including the underground lake beneath it, which exists.
