The life
Grant Allen was a Canadian-born scientist who wrote popular Darwinism for a living and fiction to pay for it, and then detonated a scandal: The Woman Who Did, whose heroine refuses marriage on principle, was denounced from pulpits across Britain in 1895 and sold in the tens of thousands. He also wrote detective stories and a guidebook series, and corresponded with Darwin and Spencer.
