The life

Jane Goodwin Austin — no relation to the English novelist — was a Massachusetts writer who made the Pilgrims her territory, digging through Plymouth records for the human detail the histories left out. Her Standish of Standish and its companions taught generations of Americans what they think they know about the Mayflower. She published two dozen books and was a friend of Hawthorne, Emerson and Alcott.
