A Massachusetts frontier settlement in the eighteenth century, and the people holding it — the minister, the captain, the woman nobody will speak to. Austin — no relation to the English novelist — made the Pilgrims and colonial New England her territory, digging through Plymouth records for the detail; the meeting-house politics here come out of documents, and the winter is not decorative. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by de Haas, Twachtman and Inness among them.
