The life
Leo Tolstoy was a Russian novelist, born a count on the estate where he spent most of his life. He fought at Sevastopol, then wrote War and Peace and Anna Karenina, and afterwards renounced both his art and his property for a radical Christianity that drew pilgrims from around the world and inspired Gandhi. At eighty-two he fled his home at night and died in a stationmaster's cottage.
