The life

Mary C. E. Wemyss wrote about the English at their least heroic — the unmarried aunt who is everyone's convenience, the country weekend, the child who says the wrong thing at tea. The Professional Aunt was her best-known book, a comic defence of the woman whose life is spent being useful to other people's families. Punch and the Cornhill printed her for years.
