The unmarried aunt: everyone’s convenience, everyone’s second thought, the woman who is sent for when a child has measles and sent home when it is over. Wemyss wrote the English at their least heroic, and this 1913 book is a comedy told by the aunt herself, in her own voice, with a clear-eyed account of exactly what the family thinks she is for. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Whichelo, Nasmyth and Marlow among them.
A boy’s profession is not infrequently chosen for him by his parents, which perhaps accounts for the curious fact that the shrewd, business-like member of a family often becomes a painter, while the artistic, unpractical one becomes a member of the Stock Exchange, in course of time, naturally.
