Max Beerbohm

Max Beerbohm was an English essayist and caricaturist whom Shaw dubbed the incomparable Max. He succeeded Shaw as drama critic of the Saturday Review, drew the literary world with a cruelty they all forgave, and wrote one novel, Zuleika Dobson, in which every undergraduate at Oxford drowns himself for love. He retired to Rapallo at thirty-eight and stayed there for half a century.
