Zuleika Dobson comes up to Oxford to visit her grandfather the Warden, and every undergraduate in the university falls in love with her — including the Duke of Dorset, who has never loved anything but himself. Beerbohm, whom Shaw called the incomparable Max, took ten years over his only novel and made it a perfect machine: a comedy in which the joke is carried through to the end without a flinch. Illustrated with 54 full-page plates — paintings by Grimshaw and Pissarro among them.
