The life

Nellie L. McClung wrote comic, warm-hearted novels of prairie towns and used the fame they brought her to win women the vote in Manitoba — she was one of the Famous Five whose case made Canadian women legally persons in 1929. The same reforming certainty had a darker side: she also backed Alberta's law permitting the sterilisation of those judged unfit.
