Samuel Hopkins Adams

Samuel Hopkins Adams was an American journalist and one of the muckrakers Roosevelt named. His 1905 series The Great American Fraud exposed the patent-medicine trade — laudanum sold as baby soother, cocaine in tonics — and helped force through the Pure Food and Drug Act the following year. He also wrote some fifty books, including detective fiction and a novel that became the film It Happened One Night.
