Adrian Van Reypen Egerton Jones — Average Jones — investigates advertising: the fraudulent notice, the coded personal column, the patent medicine that kills. Adams was one of the muckrakers Roosevelt named, and his 1905 series The Great American Fraud exposed the patent-medicine trade and helped force the Pure Food and Drug Act through Congress. The cases here are that reporting, turned into detection. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Raffaëlli, van Gogh and Quadrone among them.
