Thomas Nelson Page was born on a Virginia plantation and became the most popular voice of the Old South's afterlife — stories told by devoted former slaves who mourn the world that owned them. That vision of slavery as benign was false and enormously influential, and it made him a national favourite; he served as ambassador to Italy through the First World War. His Civil War fiction remains the sharpest thing he wrote.
