The life
Winston Churchill was an American novelist — no relation to the British statesman, who was so often confused with him that the two agreed the Englishman would sign himself Winston S. Churchill. A naval academy graduate from St. Louis, he was among the best-selling American authors of the 1900s with Richard Carvel and The Crisis, sat in the New Hampshire legislature, and gave up writing entirely at fifty-six.
