Xenophon

Xenophon was a Greek soldier, historian and student of Socrates, active around 430 to 354 BC. As a young man he joined a Greek mercenary army marching into Persia; when its commanders were murdered, he was elected to lead the survivors home across hostile country, and later wrote that march down himself. His plain, practical prose also preserved some of the earliest portraits of Socrates.
