Ten thousand Greek mercenaries march into Persia for a prince who is killed in his first battle; their generals are seized under a flag of truce; and the survivors, leaderless in hostile country, elect a young Athenian to lead them home. Xenophon wrote the account himself, in the third person, and the shout when they reach the water — the sea, the sea — is one of the oldest thrills in literature. Illustrated with 49 full-page plates — paintings by Scheyerer, Calame and Koekkoek among them.
Darius and Parysatis had two sons: the elder was named Artaxerxes, and the younger Cyrus.
Anabasis, by Xenophon, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.
It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
