Baron Trigault's Vengeance

by Émile Gaboriau 1832–1873

The book, and the century it came out of.

A ruined count, a wife who has ceased to matter to him, a mistress who intends to be a countess, and a baron who drinks in public and misses nothing. Gaboriau was a cavalry trooper and a lawyer’s clerk before he created Monsieur Lecoq and, with him, the detective novel in France; this is the second half of a story about a family taken apart methodically, and the vengeance of the title is served cold and legally. Illustrated with 50 full-page plates — paintings by Ricois, Delauney and Hoguet among them.

Vengeance! that is the first, the only thought, when a man finds himself victimized, when his honor and fortune, his present and future, are wrecked by a vile conspiracy!

A note on this edition

Baron Trigault's Vengeance, by Émile Gaboriau, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
