Berlin and Sans-Souci

Or, Frederick the Great and His Friends

by Luise Mühlbach 1814–1873

The book, and the century it came out of.

Translated by Mrs. Chapman Coleman

Frederick at home: Voltaire arriving, Voltaire quarrelling, Voltaire leaving; the flute, the greyhounds, the Berlin theatre, the brothers who cannot please him, and the ministers who dare not contradict. Mühlbach was Klara Mundt, who wrote nearly three hundred volumes; here the wars are offstage and the court is the whole subject, which suits her exactly — she is a gossip with archives. Illustrated with 60 full-page plates — paintings by Gaertner and Friedrich among them.

Author of Joseph Ii. And His Court, Frederick the Great and His Court, Merchant of Berlin, Etc.

A note on this edition

Berlin and Sans-Souci, by Luise Mühlbach, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
