Andreas Hofer

An Historical Novel

by Luise Mühlbach 1814–1873

The book, and the century it came out of.

Tyrol, 1809: an innkeeper leads the mountain peasants against Napoleon and Bavaria, beats a regular army three times at Bergisel, is abandoned by his own Emperor, and is shot at Mantua by French order. Mühlbach was Klara Mundt, who wrote nearly three hundred volumes; Hofer was a real man within living memory when she wrote, and the betrayal by Vienna is not softened. Illustrated with 59 full-page plates — paintings by Bellotto, van Horstok and Gamelin among them.

The year 1809 had come; but the war against France, so intensely longed for by all Austria, had not yet broken out, and the people and the army were vainly waiting for the war-cry of their sovereign, the Emperor Francis.

A note on this edition

Andreas Hofer, by Luise Mühlbach, complete and unabridged. Spelling and punctuation follow present-day American usage; the sentences, the paragraphs and the voice are the author’s, word for word.

It was written in another era and may carry attitudes a reader today will find dated. They are kept for the sake of the work and do not reflect the views of this house.
